About This Blog

The public should know all we can about the business of the decision makers that affect our lives, our wallets and our democracy. This is a record of my efforts to try and improve the levels of transparency and accountability within Sheffield City Council and others. To shine a light on how decisions are made and where the money goes. If I can also help others to find their own voice and influence along the way, then that is a bonus.

About Me

About Me

An Active Citizen in my 50's heavily involved in making a difference to the city's civic society. Providing a member of the public's point of view and a challenge to the way decisions are made and influenced in this city and beyond.

A news story about private profits being made from the public purse led me to ask ask why ? And how much? That was the first step, over 5 years ago, that started me on this road to creating a better understanding of local politics, decision making & influence.

About what I do

Transparency and accountability in decision making is my goal. There is a lot of information in this world even at the local level. What I do is to try and make sense of this information and, I hope, present it in a way that anyone can understand. I challenge the establishment at a local, regional & national level. I ask awkward questions to get at the facts and to try and ensure decision making is as good as it can be by putting a point of view from outside the corridors of power and holding the decision makers to account.

I am non party political, I have no affiliation to any political party, large or small, I will debate and challenge any of them. I have the ability and freedom to think outside normal Party lines and outside the establishment of civic 'leaders' and their staff. I can, therefore, put forward ideas and suggestions that would never make it past the gatekeepers of local politics and influence, for the benefit of the city.

Working with others

As part of my role as an Active Citizen I work with other organisations to better expand on what I do. I am part of the Steering Group for Sheffield for Democracy, a local community group that campaigns on issues of democracy and public engagement. Voting systems, voter registration and engagement, Human Rights, policy and legislative scrutiny and regional devolution to name but a few.

I have worked with local publisher Opus Independents on the annual Festival of Debate, contributing and delivering events on current political and social issues. I also write articles for their publication Now Then Magazine, highlighting similar issues, as well as being asked to contribute to local mainstream media

Working with local broadcaster Sheffield Live I present a magazine show on their TV channel, offering an insight into local politics, current political issues, social enterprises and community campaigns. The city's heritage is a big part of this and my aim is to contribute to a wider understanding of the heritage economy in the city.

With many other organisations and individuals I am asked to contribute ideas and strategies around public engagement and tackling the major institutions in the city, both political and otherwise.
